SAGE announced this week the launch of a new mobile app for electronically tintable SageGlass, a product of Saint-Gobain. The new app, which will debut next week at the AIA Convention 2015 in Atlanta, gives users unprecedented control for customizing and optimizing daylight for comfort inside buildings.
The new SageGlass mobile app is compatible with Apple iOS and Android devices. It allows building occupants to orchestrate customized daylighting “scenes” by controlling the SageGlass zones. The pre-established zoning can range from an entire building facade, to a single SageGlass window. The app even enables the user to control and tint specific zones within a SageGlass window using first-of-its-kind precision, flexibility and convenience.
SageGlass is electrochromic dynamic glass that tints and clears on demand or automatically to block up to 99 percent of visible light (i.e. one percent visible light transmission) without obstructing the view and connection to the outdoors. SageGlass saves energy and improves the way people experience daylight in buildings by modulating the amount of light, heat gain and glare that enters the indoor environment.
The SageGlass mobile app gives users an easy way to control the tint level of their glass from wherever they may be in a building. Setting it apart from competing technologies are its fine-grained control, manageability, and the ability to set-up predefined scenes of window tinting effects.
Users can easily control multiple settings across a building, including the level of tinting, the tinting of established areas within the building, entire sections of curtain walls or just specific windows, and even individual zones within a single pane of SageGlass.[1] They can save these customized settings as scenes which they can later activate with a single touch of their mobile device.
For example when the sun is high in the sky, users can tint a top zone of SageGlass to block glare and heat gain while leaving lower zones clear for optimal outdoor view and light. The users can now utilize this preset tint scene for optimal comfort. This ability to create scenes is also helpful for fine tuning the quality of light that enters a building, blending the right light intensity and color levels to create a more pleasant and productive environment for occupants.
Network manageability
The new SageGlass mobile app also provides building owners with the ability to manage how users interact with SageGlass to retain greater administrative control over window operation. Administrators can assign access and control rights to specific users for specific SageGlass locations to manage who and how the windows can be tinted.
“Dynamic windows like SageGlass are enabling people to actively control their environment in a building when and how they want,” said Derek Malmquist, VP marketing for SageGlass. “As windows become part of the “Internet of Things”, they are gaining intelligence and connectivity to contribute to the energy performance and daylighting strategies of smart building design. Because conditions change day-by-day, and even hour-by-hour, the new mobile app enables users to strike the right balance for delivering daylight and comfort into an occupied space without the sun’s undesirable side effects.”
Availability and requirements
The SageGlass mobile app is available immediately as a free download from the Apple App Store and Google Play store. The app is compatible with the latest generation of SageGlass, released in February 2015.
