The Steel Joist Institute, Forest, Va., has created a 13-minute video on open web steel joists available for purchase on its website at http://www.steeljoist.org/openweb. The video provides an extensive overview of open web steel joists and their benefits, including their strength-to-weight ratio, flexible and adaptable design, durability and economic advantages. A summary of the various steel joists products such as the bar joist or short-span K-Series, long-span and deep long-span LH/DLH-Series, CJ-Series and steel Joist Girders also is included. “Viewers will find ideas on how to utilize the different types of steel joists and learn how the Steel Joist Institute can be a helpful resource,” said Robert Hackworth, managing director. “We hope that after viewing this video, people will understand why steel joists should be a superior option for their next project.” The Steel Joist Institute’s 80-year involvement in providing standards for open web steel joist products and the steel joist industry is discussed, as well as SJI’s Technical Digests and publications. The institute’s main publication, Standard Specifications, is mentioned in-depth, with details on the publication’s load and weight tables for steel joists and joist girders, its reprint of OSHA safety standards for erection of steel joists, and overview of K- and LH-Series joists and Joist Girders. The “Open Web Steel Joists” video can be viewed on SJI’s website for free at http://www.steeljoist.org/site, or purchased as a DVD to share with colleagues and clients for $25.00 under the Publications section at http://www.steeljoist.org/video.
