John P. Surma, chairman and chief executive officer of United States Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, will be the guest speaker for the opening general session at the Metal Construction Association’s 2010 Semi-Annual Meeting, July 25 to 27 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pa. Surma will address current economic conditions of the steel industry and the importance of the construction market. The session will be held on Sunday, July 25 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Surma has acted as chairman and CEO of U. S. Steel since February 2006, after serving as vice chairman and chief financial officer, and then president and chief operating officer. He is a member of the board of directors of The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. He serves as vice chairman of the board of directors of the World Steel Association and held the title of chairman from 2006 through 2007. Surma is also a member of the board of directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute and previously served as chairman and vice chairman of the organization. He is a current member of both the National Petroleum Council and The Business Council.
