A new LandscapeInteriors woven metal fabric system from Cambridge Architectural creates dividing walls and provides an innovative ceiling system inside the recently opened Cultural Arts Center on Montgomery College’s Takoma Park, MD campus. When challenged with designing a visually distinctive and functional interior design scheme for the Cultural Arts Center’s 500-seat house, Cambridge broke the mold, developing a first-of-its-kind tensioned ceiling system using architectural mesh. The system is extremely unique and adaptable because it can be specified for any length while remaining completely flat with very little support to create expansive, seamless ceiling solutions. In the Cultural Arts Center, Cambridge engineered the system to allow the metal fabric ceiling panels to stretch over 50 feet in length. The new system is a feat of engineering and craftsmanship that further proves the versatility of mesh and the benefits of Cambridge’s design-build approach. The panels also maintain acoustic transparency, improve ventilation and engagingly reflect architectural lighting. The Cultural Arts Center is the newest addition to the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District and the area’s premier venue for the performing arts, hosting professional public performances and events sponsored by community organizations. Cambridge’s material was able to provide a vibrant and distinctive look matching the community surrounding the Center. Every Cambridge LandscapeInteriors metal fabric application dramatically defines and separates space, while additionally providing visibility, light and air flow. Additionally, LandscapeInteriors applications always combine superior aesthetics with high quality performance, often eliminating the need for additional interior materials. Cambridge offers a wide range of metal fabric patterns and attachment hardware, and always provides comprehensive design and engineering assistance. Construction on the Cultural Arts Center was completed in June 2009. The project team consists of architect SmithGroup, Washington, DC, contractor/installer Bovis Lend Lease, Bethesda, MD and facility owner, Montgomery College, Takoma Park, MD.
