AIA Convention and Design Expo networking events (April 2009)

San Francisco is certainly a city with plenty of outlets for arts, music, entertainment, sports and sites. However, in your free time during the convention, you may want to focus on getting to know your colleagues, exchanging ideas and making connections (see the full schedule on page 24). To take full advantage of the expo, you may want to partake in some of these unique networking opportunities. For more information, visit the events section at www.aiaconvention.com. Friday Night Live Join San Francisco architects in celebrating the best of California cuisine at a casual, jazz-filled evening at the new award-winning San Francisco Federal Building. Unwind with your friends from around the world, visit the illuminated skygarden with unparalleled views of the city, and enjoy some of the region’s best wine and local brew. This intimate party will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1. Dining by Design Experience the diversity of San Francisco’s neighborhoods, cuisines and restaurant designs on Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30. Dine privately with the architects/designers and meet the executive chefs. Featured are dining destinations Boulevard and The Slanted Door; soon-to-be classics Perbacco, Press Club and Spruce; and neighborhood hot-spots Bar Bambino, Conduit, Local, Orson and Yoshi’s. Your event menu will be autographed by the architects/designers and the executive chefs. 13th Annual Chancellor’s Cup Golf Open Join architects, exhibitors, friends and colleagues at the 13th Annual Chancellor’s Cup Golf Open at the Presidio Golf course, on Wednesday, April 29, 8:30 a.m., for a shotgun start. Located just minutes from downtown San Francisco, this 18-hole course is 6,500 yards of challenging golf winding through beautiful Eucalyptus and Monterey Pine trees in the city’s trademark hills. Designed with tight fairways and strategically placed bunkers, this 18-hole, hilly golf course offers a unique challenge for golfers of all abilities. Originally designed by Robert Wood Johnstone, the course was expanded by Johnstone in collaboration with William McEwen in 1910 and then redesigned and lengthened by the British firm of Fowler & Simpson in 1921. The Chancellor’s Cup Golf Open has contributed more than $350,000 to the AIA College of Fellows Fund over the last 12 years. The College of Fellows seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of the institute, advance the architecture profession and be of ever-increasing service to society.
