ATAS recognizes standout metal projects (August 2009)

ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa., recognized those who further advance metal in construction with its Project of the Year awards. The 2008 ATAS Project of the Year awards were open to any project completed in 2008 using systems manufactured by ATAS. The winning project in the commercial roof division was the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Princess Anne Office Building in Virginia Beach, Va. The Bone White Field-Lok panels were distributed by Best Distributing Co., Virginia Beach, and installed by Shaddeau Roofing & Construction, Norfolk, Va. The building’s architectural firm was Paul Finch & Associ- ATAS recognizes standout metal projects ates P.C., Norfolk. The 4,375-square-foot (406-m2) roof required staggered spliced panels to achieve the visual impact of this double curve with a 74-foot (23- m) radius that loops back down to a 300-foot (91-m) radius creating a concave and convex S-shape. The winning project in the commercial walls division was the North Carolina Central University BRITE building in Durham, N.C. The project’s architects were from Freelon Group, Durham, who chose the Silversmith (coated on both sides) perforated Belvedere panels. The panels were distributed by Insulation Systems, Raleigh, N.C., and installed by SDS Corp., Apex, N.C. This vastly visible 45-foot- (14-m- ) high modern archway is the focal point of the NCCU campus and shows the unique profiles and options available with metal. The winning project from the residential roofs division was a private residence in Mobile, Ala. The Sierra Tan Castle Top roof was installed by Thomas Roofi ng, Mobile, and distributed by Roofers Mart SE, Pensacola, Fla. L. Craig Roberts Architects, Mobile, was the architect. This 27,825-square-foot (2,585-m2) roof demonstrates craftsmanship and unique design using diamond-shaped metal shingles. The winning project in the residential walls division was a private residence in East Hampton, N.Y. The architect, Joe Eisner, AIA, from Eisner Design LLC, New York City, used Silversmith Dutch Seam panels. The distributor and installer was JA Copperworks Inc., East Hampton. This modern home was wrapped in metal, creating an envelope of protection and multiple green qualities, including a cool roof/wall product that is Energy Star qualifi ed.
