Coatings, paints and finishes featured in Metal Architecture’s September 2019 issue.

AkzoNobel Inc.
AkzoNobel’s Polydure Expressions finish features a combination of texture over print pattern that adds depth and dimension to prefabricated metal products for exterior and interior applications. The finish can be applied to hot-dipped galvanized substrates, Galvalume, Galfan, ZAM and aluminum. It is applied to properly cleaned and pre-treated substrates through roll coating, and oven baking to cure. POLYDURE Expressions can be applied as a three-layer system over hot-dipped galvanized substrates with a top coat and ink layer over one of AkzoNobel’s color basecoats. All other substrates require the use of AkzoNobel’s primers in a four-layer system.

CENTRIA
CENTRIA’s Natural Stone Series of coatings mimic the appearance of natural stones. Five colors are available: Beach, Bedrock, Grain, Quarry and Shale. The coatings contain 70 percent PVDF resins with a matte, low-gloss finish and fine aggregate texture. The coatings are applied to substrates including aluminum, galvanized steel and Galvalume-coated steel with a 0.2-mil (5.1 micron) primer and 0.8-mil (20 micron) color coat with fine aggregate. Natural Stone Series coatings are part of the Allura coating system, which are fluoropolymer coatings with matte, low-gloss finishes and aggregate textures.

PPG Industries Inc.
PPG’s Duranar MXL is a medium gloss coil coating formulated with PVDF resins. The fluoropolymer coating is infused with mica and metallic effects, the same effects found in automotive coatings. Depending on special effect pigments in the MXL clear coat and how they interact with colors and mica/metallic effects in the basecoat beneath it, and how daylight hits surfaces, Duranar MXL can appear three-dimensional. Duranar MXL can also be formulated to transition between a frosty appearance to a sparkling appearance, with changing daylight reflection. To create the transitioning effect, single color special effects or photo-chromatic pigments can be added to the coil coating.

Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings
Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings’ 70 percent Fluropon Extreme is a smooth, low-gloss coil coating. It is formulated to resist abrasions caused prior to panel installation at factories, during transport and on job sites. Additionally, Fluropon Extreme coil coating resists weather damage including dirt, stains, chalking and fading.
