Apartments connect with outdoors

Photo: Cameron Campbell, Integrated StudioASK Studio designed MacRae Terrace Apartments in Des Moines, Iowa, to connect with the outdoors. It is located across the street from McRae Park and features large expanses of glass. Additionally, Juliet balconies open to tree-filled views. The fenestration is limited and functional on other exposures. The 7,000-square-foot project required a minimum of six units, and the site was tight in terms of codes and zoning.

Artistic Iron Works fabricated, and Point Builders LLC installed, Juliet balconies with steel, L-angle railings and cable and a trash gate with steel decks for the project. Artistic Iron Works also fabricated a canopy and awnings above entry doors with folded plate steel and rod tension supports.

The apartment building was constructed on a site once occupied by a single family home on a loud and fast street, adjacent to a bar and kiddy corner from an unused commercial structure. ASK Studio designed it to disengage from the noise and speed of the street. The project was completed in July 2016.
