Campbell Mansion Makeover: New Roof Complements Historic Landmark’s Longevity and Style

Originally built in 1790, the Campbell Mansion, located in Bethany, W.Va, was considered an elaborate residence in a frontier community. Now a National Historic Landmark, the structure contains the original limestone foundation and oak floors, which are still sound. To complement the longevity and style of the original architecture, Bethany College chose Follansbee’s KlassicKolors in a vivid shade of red as the modern replacement to the antiquated roof. The roof is from Follansbee located in Follansbee, W.Va.

“The baked on color, which will eliminate painting, closely matched the old roof that was removed,” said William R. Kiefer, executive vice president for finance and treasurer at Bethany College. “It fits in well and does not look like a ‘new’ roof on a very old building.”

Open daily for tours, the Campbell Mansion serves as a window into 18th century living. Rooms inside of the home feature decorations and furniture from the period, including the original French wallpaper, as well as Alexander Campbell’s original bed. Additions to the home over a 45-year period increased the total number of rooms to 27, including a parlor, study and numerous bedrooms.

“The Campbell Mansion is a perfect example of KlassicKolors’ ability to accurately imitate historic roofing styles and colors,” explained Edward Thomas, vice president and general manager of Follansbee. “We are happy to provide Bethany College with a product that reflects the quality and durability found in the original construction of the Campbell Mansion.”

“The company’s reputation for manufacturing a high quality product ultimately led to our decision to specify a Follansbee roof,” Kiefer continued. “The roof is exactly what we were looking for, and we are very pleased to have it on the home.”

Construction on the roof began in spring 2007 and was completed in summer 2007. T.G. Cupp & Sons Inc., Wheeling, W.Va., served as roofing contractor and installer. KlassicKolors is a pre-painted Terne II roof coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT (zinc/tin) alloy and then painted with solar reflective coatings. The ZT alloy extends the life of the metal and provides enhanced durability. Available in designer and custom colors, the coating’s low sheen gives a traditional look for new and existing construction and restoration projects.
