Contemporary Church Finds Value in Building System’s Construction

After 20 years of growth and 1,000 members, Heartland Vineyard Church, Cedar Falls, Iowa, expanded to its fourth location. The 57,000-square-foot (5,295-m2) facility was built on 30 acres (12 hectares) in Waterloo, Iowa, and features a multipurpose sanctuary with removable chairs supplemented by a backdrop of stadium seating atop storage space for chairs and other equipment. Heartland’s new church can accommodate 1,000 people for services, or another option is to remove the chairs and reconfigure the floor for other activities and events. A two-story classroom and office building is linked to the sanctuary by a large atrium designed by AHTS Architects, Waterloo, and Levi Architecture, Cedar Falls. Fred Rose, LC/The Rose Cos., the local Butler Builder, led the $4.5 million project.

A hybrid structure with Butler Widespan building systems was used to achieve the required 137-foot (42-m) clearance over the sanctuary. The Kansas City, Mo.-based Butler Manufacturing metal building system transitions into a conventional steel structure for the office and classroom space. A Butler MR-24 standing-seam metal roof system, insulated to R-45 atop metal deck, along with a mix of Butler Thermawall and Texturewall metal wall systems, were used to create an energy-efficient building shell.
