Completed in June 2007, the new 170,000- square-foot (15,793-m2) Schofield Barracks Shopping Center in Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii, was built to replace a much smaller 1950s-era store. The project required 7,062 square feet (656 m2) of 20-gauge galvanized steel “B” deck panels by ASC Steel Deck, Sacramento, Calif. They were curved in lengths from 18 feet 3 1/2 inches (5 m 89 mm) with an outside radius of 13 feet 9 1/2 inches (4 m 241 mm) by Curveline Inc., Ontario, Calif. Standing- seam panels, curved on-site by Macsteel Service Centers USA, Kapolei, Oahu, Hawaii, were applied over the curved deck to provide a color accent to the building. The roof panels were 24-gauge MAC 150 Galvalume standing seam panels with a Kynar 500 finish in Jade.
“The older buildings use graceful arched forms in windows and entrances, and in designing the new Schofield Barracks, it was important that we capture this historical quality and regional character,” said Steve Hindley, president of ALSC Architects, Spokane, Wash., partner in charge of the project. “The curve was a tool we used to accomplish that goal and was incorporated in the window openings, in major portals for entry, and in the curved roof form for the canopy.”
Army & Air Force Exchange Service, Dallas, was the developer; Bodell Construction Co., Salt Lake City, was the general contractor; Coffman Engineers, Spokane, was the structural engineer; Sure Steel Inc., Sandy, Utah, was the decking panel installer; and Standard Sheetmetal, Honolulu, was the roof panel installer.
