The 3,188-square-foot (296-m2) ETW Caretaker Residence in Waukesha, Wis., utilized a metal building, roof and walls from Star Building Systems, Oklahoma City. The metal building was made up of Star’s SSB and SWE structural systems, which were used to blend with a pre-existing Star Building housing a manufacturing business. Star Buildings also supplied 4,200 square feet (390 m2) of StarShield roof system in Aluminum-Zinc and 2,000 square feet (186 m2) of StarMark metal wall system in Almond. Split-face CMU block, stone-faced masonry and tinted glass in aluminum framing was used in addition to the StarMark system. Wausau, Wis.-based Custom Glass Products supplied the glass, and Pittco Architectural Metals Inc., Elk Grove Village, Ill., did the aluminum framing.
Canopies were added to give character to the front of the residence. Conventional construction was used for an elevated office/workout room, which was constructed on a precast deck spanning above an outside patio and utilized StarMark panels. Load-bearing steel studs were used to support Z purlins to create a single-slope roof that sloped the opposite direction as the main structure.
Designed with an open, or loft, concept, the building interior utilized exposed steel beams, steel railings, stained concrete floors and high open ceilings. In-floor heat was installed to ensure the interior space remained cozy during the cooler months. The three-bedroom, two bath, two-car garage residence is an addition to a 20,000-square-foot (1,858-m2) manufacturing and office building. The garage is complete with an additional 20- by 20-foot (6-m) storage area and dog shower. The garage walls were lined with Star Building’s liner panel.
The project also utilized 6-inch (152-mm) fiberglass batt insulation from Columbus, Wis.-based Therm-All Insulation on all metal roof and wall areas. Steel studs were used on the interior, and 6-inch unfaced batt insulation was added to those areas.
Prairie Lights Architecture, Inc., Milwaukee, was the architect; LMC Inc., New Berlin, Wis., was the builder; and Steve’s Construction, Milwaukee, was the steel erector.
