An 11,000-square-foot hangar at Drake Field in Fayetteville, Ark., was constructed to provide a large, open space for storing and accommodating aircraft. The hangar features a 96-foot-wide Schweiss Doors hydraulic door that enables easy aircraft access and was delivered through close coordination among the project team.
Alongside Schweiss, the project team included First Star Construction, Burris Architecture, and Wilshar Steel as the design underwent several revisions before construction began.
“It was a very collaborative process,” says Eric Pedmomre, director of construction at First Star Construction.
Early plans specified a liftstrap bifold hangar door, but during the design process, the project team selected a one-piece hydraulic door instead. The change was meant to provide an unobstructed interior door appearance and an integrated awning when the door is open.

The 96 x 28-ft hydraulic door required structural modifications to accommodate its load requirements. Engineers from Wilshar Steel and Schweiss Doors coordinated with the construction team during preconstruction to finalize the required building changes prior to manufacturing. The door was then installed during the hangar construction process.
The finished facility includes aircraft storage space as well as a second-story mezzanine with a lounge and balcony.
