ChatGPT Enters the AEC Realm

In recent months, there’s been a lot of discussion about ChatGPT. For those who aren’t aware, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI. It’s a natural language processing tool that allows users to have human-like conversations by answering questions and assist users with tasks such as composing emails, essays and code.

The reason I bring up ChatGPT is that I recently saw a press release on how it’s being used in the construction industry. Which led me to a Google search on how it can be used in the architecture industry.

The original article I saw discussed how construction workers can talk to their plans and their plans will talk back to them. Developed by Togal.AI, the OpenAI ChatGPT enhances document management so users can use semantic search functionality to find relevant information across thousands of pages of plans, contracts, specification books, schedules and budgets in seconds.

Patrick Murphy, Togal.AI founder and CEO, said, “ChatGPT will make it easier for construction professionals to get the information they need quickly and easily, allowing them to focus on other important aspects of their work. We believe this is just the beginning of ChatGPT in the construction industry.”

For the construction industry, AI technology allows users to have relevant project information at their fingertips, ensuring projects meet deadlines and stay withing budget. But how can it help in the architecture and design industry?

An article on dezeen.com shares how Neil Leach, a professor at Florida International University and AI architecture expert, asked ChatGPT for an attention-grabbing answer to how AI could negatively impact the architecture profession in the future. The bot responded that architects could become a thing of the past, with AI quickly advancing to the point where it can generate the design of a building completely autonomously.

The bot continued, saying with the potential to create designs faster and with more accuracy than ever before, AI has the potential to revolutionize the architecture industry, leaving traditional architects out of the equation.

While the thought of removing human architects out of the design process is a bit scary, other articles share how architects can leverage ChatGPT for their practice. An article on maket.ai notes that ChatGPT can improve communication and collaboration by generating personalized emails to clients, outlining project details, or generate reports for stakeholders that detail the progress of a project. Additionally, it adds that ChatGPT can be used to generate building design proposals and presentations, making it easier for architects to communicate their designs in a more compelling and convincing way.

While the full benefits of AI programs and things like ChatGPT are still unknown, hopefully architects and designers will find a way to leverage its powers for the benefit of the industry, without risk of being replaced by computers.
