The State University of New York’s Upstate Medical University Vertical Expansion in Syracuse, N.Y., is one of the most dramatic construction projects in the facility’s 40-year history. The new six-floor expansion was built above the hospital’s existing East Wing and is a great addition to the Syracuse skyline.
The design for this seemingly weightless tower that is suspended in the blue sky was inspired by a tree house. The vertical expansion features patient care floors for cardiology, neurology and oncology, along with two floors dedicated to pediatric care that serves as the Golisano Children’s Hospital. Additionally, an interstitial floor will accommodate the heating, electrical and ventilation systems for the new addition. The 250,000-square-foot
(23,225-m2) project was completed in September 2009.
Moon Township, Pa.-based CENTRIA supplied a variety of products for the project, including 22,311 square feet (2,073 m2) of 22-gauge Profile Series
Super-Rib with MicroSeam Corners in Gray Velvet with a smooth Sundance Mica coating;15,440 square feet (1,434 m2) of 22-gauge IW Series IW-10A vertical wall panels in Light Gray with a smooth Fluorofinish coating; 11,840 square feet (1,100 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 3-inch (76-mm) vertical wall panels in Gray Velvet with an embossed Sundance Mica coating; 9,494 square feet (882 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 2-inch
(51-mm) horizontal wall panels in Light Gray with an embossed Flourofinish coating; 7,048 square feet (655 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 2-inch vertical wall panels in Blue with an embossed Sundance Mica coating; 6,039 square feet (561 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 2-inch horizontal wall panels in Light Bronze with an embossed Sundance AM coating; 1,376 square feet (128 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 2-inch horizontal wall panels in Aspen Gold with an embossed Fluorofinish coating; 6,644 square feet (617 m2) of structural standing-seam roof systems SRS2 1.33 in Lee Ivory with a smooth Fluorofinish coating; 4,257 square feet (395 m2) of 22-gauge Profile Series BR5-36 in Roseland Rose with a smooth Sundance AM coating; and C/S Louvers.
The CENTRIA products were selected for their aesthetics, performance and sustainability. The multiple colors and profiles create a dynamic design that catches the eye, while the unique design creates a fun atmosphere for the children admitted to the Golisano’s Children’s Hospital.
The use of two distinctive profiles-BR5-36 and Super-Rib-in two diverse colors create intense dimension in the exterior design. Additionally, the light gray color of the IW-10A panels complements the color scheme of the exterior design. The assortment of
Formawall Dimension Series panels in different orientations, colors and finishes provide the versatility needed to complete the architect’s vision for the project.
CENTRIA’s Profile Series IW-10A panels, Formawall Dimension Series panels and Structural Standing-Seam Roof System are Cradle to Cradle Silver certified.
