First NBA stadium to earn LEED certification

amway centerCompleted in 2010, the 800,000-square-foot Amway Center and Parking Garage in Orlando, Fla., is the home to the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Situated on an 8-acre site adjacent to the downtown business district, the arena is a core part of an overall strategic plan for continued revitalization of Orlando’s urban core, designed to make the area a recreation and dining destination. In addition to the Magic and NCAA basketball events, the multi-purpose design is intended to host hockey and arena football games, ice shows, concerts and many other special events.

A key goal of the project was sustainability, with the Amway Center being the first NBA facility to earn LEED for New Construction certification. Many of the LEED certification points earned were a result of the building materials that were used for the project, including 15 percent of the building materials that are recycled and 20 percent that came from local sources. Other materials, including the buildings’ architectural metal panels, were manufactured to the architect’s exact specification, resulting in reduce jobsite waste. Out of the waste that was generated by the construction, approximately 83 percent of the wood, concrete and steel materials were recycled rather than sent to a landfill.

The Amway Center’s design was based on the innovative and dramatic use of metal and glass. CENTRIA, Moon Township, Pa., supplied 90,670 square feet of 22/22-gauge Formawall Graphix Series and Formawall Dimension Series 2-inch horizontal metal wall panels in Silversmith with an embossed Sundance Mica coating; 37,836 square feet of 0.0400-gauge EcoScreen Perforated Screenwall (BR5-36 EcoScreen with MicroSeam Corners) with a staggered, 1/8-inch diameter by 7/32-inch spaced pattern in Silversmith with a Sundance Mica coating; 35,903 square feet of 22-gauge Profile Series Exposed Fastener Profiles (Super-Rib with MicroSeam Corners and Super-Rib Louvers) in Silversmith with a smooth finish and Sundance Mica coating; 7,659 square feet of 0.0400-gauge EcoScreen Perforated Screenwall (MR3-36 EcoScreen) with a staggered, 3/8- by 9/16-inch and 1/8- by 7/32-inch pattern in Pewter with a Sundance Mica coating; 5,426 square feet of 0.0400-gauge Super-Rib with MicroSeam Corners in Silversmith with a Sundance Mica coating; 4,324 square feet of 20-gauge Profile Series IW Series (IW-40A) vertical in Silversmith with a smooth Sundance Mica coating; 805 square feet of 20-gauge Profile Series IW Series (IW-10A) vertical in Silversmith with a smooth Sundance Mica coating; and Formavue Windows (FV 400).
