Shopping center roof endures wind forces

The 7,000-square-foot (650-m2) Parkway Plaza shopping center in Summerville, S.C., is a standalone building featuring a metal roof from Metallic Building Co., Houston. The 24-gauge Double-Lok roofing system is designed to endure high-force winds. The 50- by 140-foot (15- by 43-m) building has a 15 1/2-foot (5-m) eave height and 1/2:12 roof slope.

A metal building system was chosen because of its cost efficiency and quick turnaround time. The standing-seam roof was chosen because it provided less penetration. The project also features brick and Hardi-Plank to give the building an “old Summerville” look. Parkway Plaza also utilizes custom canvas awnings on all four sides and dual fronts. Metal studs for curtainwalls on all four sides, metal caps for all four cornices, stainless valley gutters and aluminum storefront glass are all showcased in this project.

Completed in February 2009, Berenyi Inc., Charleston, S.C., was the architect, and Frampton & Associates Inc., Ladson, S.C., was the general contractor, erector and roofing contractor.
