The 6,370-square-foot (592-m2) St. Catherine of Siena Gymnasium in Seattle utilized Oklahoma City-based Star Building Systems’ StarShield Roof System in Snow White along with Star’s DuraRib Wall System in Light Stone. The DuraRib was use in addition to masonry and stone. Completed in May 2009, this gymnasium utilized a custom metal building due to significant cost savings.
Star’s StarShield was used in conjunction with conventional construction on the end and sidewalls for excellent blending of the systems. Star also provided structural support for the basketball backstops.
The builder, Building Systems West LLC, Gig Harbor, Wash., states this project shows a very successful integration of a metal building system with conventional construction methods in the adjacent structures, for one cohesive appearance. Harthorne Hagen Architects, Seattle, was the architect, and Merit Construction NW, Tacoma, Wash., was the general contractor.
As for being energy efficient, this project utilized R-38 simple-saver insulation in the roof and R-22 simple-saver insulation in the walls.
