The 92,000-square-foot (8,547-m2) Fahrens Business Plaza in Merced, Calif., is made up of three buildings that combine stucco, glass, stone veneers and cornice accents for an eye-catching exterior. Memphis, Tenn.- based Varco Pruden Buildings supplied the rigid frame system and standing-seam roofs for the buildings to increase its longevity while reducing maintenance.
Completed in May 2008, the buildings provide a mix of retail, repair/installation and distribution. The 14-foot (4-m) Roll Lite Model 601 roll-up doors from U.S. Door and Building Components, Orlando, Fla., on both sides of the alley are a convenience for retail tenants and a necessity for auto-related or contracting businesses.
Varco Pruden also supplied premium insulation, which is designed to reduce heating and cooling costs over the life of the project. Eye-catching corner towers with hipped roofs and main entries add to the visual appeal of the center. Sun-shielding awnings and glazed windows add to the projects eco-friendly design, while offering significant cost savings.
Jim Xu Pe with Golden Valley Engineering, Merced, was the architect, and Modern Steel Structures, Ceres, Calif., was the builder.
