Metal fabric provides dramatic visual appeal

Cambridge, Md.-based Cambridge Architectural supplied a Parkade metal fabric application that functions as a cost-effective exterior cladding solution with dramatic visual appeal at the new Home Depot store in Jersey City, N.J.

The retailer is situated on the edge of a booming town at the base of the Holland Tunnel where more than 100,000 cars pass daily. The prominent location led to the desire for a visually appealing, yet durable and cost-effective exterior cladding material to wrap the store’s adjacent two-story, 600-space parking facility.

The Parkade metal fabric integrates well with the other building materials while offering a distinctive look. Approximately 14,700 square feet (1,366 m2) of woven metal fabric was used to lend a modern, contemporary visual appeal to the parking facility.

“We specified architectural mesh because we wanted to mask the parking garage and improve ventilation,” said Joshua Burdick, president of SBLM Architects, New York City. “Cambridge is a solid company whose product allowed us to satisfy both of these needs.”

The Parkade system was created with Cambridge’s Mid- Balance metal fabric pattern-a large-scale, flexible open weave that shades and screens structures-and attached in tension with Eclipse attachment hardware.

Construction was completed during fall 2007, in time for the Home Depot store to celebrate its grand opening on Nov. 1, 2007. Hunter Roberts Construction Group, Bedminster, N.J., was the general contractor.
