Custom metal building is practical choice

Completed in March 2008, the 16,817-square foot (1,562-m2) Faith Harvest Church in Durham, N.C., utilized Oklahoma City-based Star Building Systems’ StarShield Roof System in Seal Brown. Conventional construction was used for the walls, including studs with brick and EIFS.

A custom metal building was a practical choice for the church considering the cost of span and height requirements. Additional features include sidewall and endwall overhangs with multiple roof slopes. To make the church energy efficient, compact florescent lights were used instead of metal halide. Additionally, R-15 insulation was used in the walls and a 4-inch- (102-mm-) thick insulation in the roof with 6 inches (152 mm) unfaced above the ceiling to equal R-30 insulation for the roof.

Gary Glueck, Nashville, N.C., was the architect; Danco Builders Inc., Rocky Mount, N.C., was the builder; and King’s Inc., Knightdale, N.C., was the steel erector.
