Aesthetics are key at world-class luxury resort

The Emerald Grande at Harborwalk in Destin, Fla., is a world-class luxury resort offering 281 residences for both fractional and whole ownership. Set on 15 acres (6 hectares) on the Destin Harbor at the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, the resort is made up of two 13-story towers with residences ranging in size from 1,075 square feet (100 m2) for one-bedroom, two-bath units and 2,600 square feet (242 m2) for four-bedroom, four-bath units.

Mike Rutland, architect, senior vice president and CEO of 2WR/HolmesWilkins Architects Inc., Montgomery, Ala., said metal roofing was chosen because it was readily available and matched the aesthetics of the building.

The project utilized more than 120,000 square feet (11,148 m2) of 16-inch- (406-mm-) wide, 0.032-aluminum Englert Series 1300 1 1/2-inch (38-mm) mechanically seamed profile in Forest Green by Englert Inc., Perth Amboy, N.J.

“Metal was the perfect choice to maintain the aesthetic and still provide durability for a project with so many different slopes, elevations and radius areas,” said Andrew Nelson, project manager for roofing contractor Bel-Mac Roofing, Rockledge, Fla.

The buildings share a spa with 11 treatment rooms for massage and beauty treatments, along with a steam room; a world-class fitness center featuring private training; a multilevel pool deck with indoor and outdoor pools; hot tubs; a children’s play area; and an entertainment and dining area modeled after a 1920s yacht club with a restaurant, bar, concierge and shopping.
