The Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center in Schaumburg, Ill.,
boasts a contemporary design that is expressive yet functional. Situated 25
miles (40 km) from downtown Chicago, the hotel blends futuristic architecture
with a heightened appreciation for the surrounding natural wetlands.
Creating a setting that provides an exceptional gathering place, the 17-story, 500- room Renaissance Hotel is accompanied by a convention center featuring 100,000 square feet (9,290 m2) of pillar-less exhibition space, a 28,000-square-foot (2,601-m2) ballroom and 20,000 square feet (1,858 m2) of meeting space.
Metal gives the hotel and convention center a clean, modern-day look and a sleek, bold appearance with crisp white tones. The project utilized a selection of metal panels from Moon Township, Pa.-based CENTRIA, including 97,673 square feet (9,074 m2) of 22/26-gauge Formawall Dimension Series 3-inch (76-mm) Horizontal in Off White with a smooth finish and Fluorofinish coating; 13,027 square feet (1,210 m2) of 22-gauge IW- 10A Horizontal in Off White with a smooth finish and Fluorofinish coating; and 57,809 square feet (5,370 m2) of 22/26-gauge Versawall Vertical in Off White with an embossed striated finish and Fluorofinish coating.
CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series insulated metal composite wall systems are lightweight and easy to install, in addition to helping the building team meet its aesthetic goal. The Versawall factory foam-insulated wall and roof panels provide a clean, uninterrupted surface on the vertical convention center walls through the use of concealed fasteners. Its increased span capability reduces support-steel requirements while allowing facilities to benefit from lower insulation costs due to the lightweight nature of the panels. The Formawall and Versawall panels are also environmentally responsible, earning Cradle to Cradle Silver Certification. The IW Series concealed fastener profiles provide a clean, unbroken appearance and are designed for all-weather installation, allowing for fast-track scheduling. Their interchangeable weather-resistant lock-joint design allows architects to mix and match panel profi les throughout a project.
John Portman & Associates, Atlanta, along with Daniel P. Coffey
& Associates, Chicago, were the architects on the project. Walsh Construction, Chicago, was the general contractor; G & L Associates Inc., Des Plaines, Ill., was the dealer; and TRS Metal and Roofing LLC, Waukesha, Wis., was the installer.
