The 48,502-square-foot (4,506-m2) Challenge Printing complex in Sanford, N.C., utilized Oklahoma City-based Star Building Systems’ StarShield Roof System in Sandstone, in addition to Houston-based MBCI’s Battenlok metal roofing panels in Classic Green. Star also supplied its StarMark Wall System in Sandstone that was used in conjunction with conventional walls. Completed in June 2007, the project utilized Star’s SMT, SWE and SSB structural systems.
Custom metal buildings were chosen for their speed of construction, clear spans and flexibility for expansion. In addition to metal, conventional construction was used on the walls consisting of brick and block masonry up to 12 feet (4 m). An additional office building was attached to the Star structure using stud construction, with the MBCI Battenlok panels serving as the roof for this building. The project also utilized R-19 insulation throughout.
Don Schaap, Raleigh, N.C., was the architect, and David H. Simpson Construction Co., Sanford, N.C., was the builder and steel erector.
