Zinc Creates Cohesive Aesthetic

This zoomed out shot of the dark grey panelled home. A curved driveway leads to a two-car garage, and in front of the driveway is a manicured lawn. The design and construction of a private residence in Allegan, Mich., became a story of craftsmanship, dedication, and the pursuit of a dream home built through years of experience and hands-on effort. Dirk and Ann VanZalen, both skilled in their own rights, took on the challenge of installing zinc panels to create an exterior that would stand the test of time.

With Dirk VanZalen’s extensive background in woodworking, the couple was no stranger to detailed craftsmanship. When they decided to incorporate zinc into their house’s design, it was a decision driven by aesthetics and longevity. The use of zinc was not just for the exterior; zinc panels are also incorporated on a fireplace wall inside the house, establishing a striking connection between the interior and exterior.

For the installation of the 279 m2 (3,000 sf) of 20-gauge zinc panels, Sheet Metal
Supply Ltd. worked closely with the VanZalens, supplying them with interlocking flat lock tiles, each measuring 0.4 x 1.4 m (1.3 x 1.5 ft) long.

With nearly 500 tiles to install, the process was meticulous and demanding, especially when cutting and fitting around windows and doors. “You’d be surprised how few tiles are actually installed without being cut to fit,” says Dirk. In the backyard, a stone patio surrounds the house. Tall windows make up the rear view. A large red planter sits on the patio.

One of the biggest hurdles was acquiring the necessary tools, but Dirk found a used brake, which became a crucial asset in shaping the trim pieces by hand. The couple’s collaboration extended beyond just the physical work; they worked closely with David Bareman, RA, a friend of theirs, who helped define the house’s overall aesthetic.

Through teamwork, dedication, and expert craftsmanship, the VanZalens transformed their vision into reality, even cutting down oak trees on the property to use the lumber for custom interior elements. The zinc panels were the finishing touch that completed their sustainable, modern design. “We’re very happy with the way everything turned out,” says Ann.
