The 23-story, 351,987-square-foot 123 East Cermak building contains three hotel properties: Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn and Home2Suites. Antunovich Associates Inc. designed exterior walls with three colors of insulated metal panels (IMPs), some with wide reveals to create shadow lines: Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings’ Clay, Medium Gray and Silversmith.
All American Exterior Solutions installed 35,500 square feet of Kingspan Insulated Panels Inc.’s 3-inch-thick BENCHMARK Designwall 2000 IMPs. Approximately 2,100 panels were used on the project; more than 400 panels have transverse bends.
The IMPs have custom widths and 2-inch joint reveals. Wide reveals required extended trim-less ends to avoid foam exposure at the upper portions of the panels. Metal clips were fabricated and installed at the reveal locations of the panels. Additionally, slab edge panels were incorporated. Four wide panels are followed by a narrower panel at each floor level.
The urban site required incremental staging for the panel installation. Mike Underwood, division manager at All American Exterior Solutions, says, “Because the job site was in a tight downtown space, we had to schedule multiple deliveries to load the job for one-to-two weeks’ worth of panels. This strategy required multiple cranes and hoisting days, since we had to load all the panels onto the fourth-floor roof.”
The 123 East Cermak building has 466 guest rooms, 7,000 square feet of meeting space, four restaurants and an indoor pool.
