Design includes curtainwall bays with rainscreen system

Curtainwall bays make up two almond-shaped phases of the design for Nemours Children's Health Systems' Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. Alternating niches between the curtainwall bays were clad with Metal Sales and Service Inc.'s Metalwërks Arcwall rainscreen aluminum composite material (ACM) drained and back-ventilated (DBV) panel system using a dry-set spline method.

The 450,000-square-foot buildings are accented by a recessed colonnade featuring 26 columns with 24-inch diameters and 0.125-aluminum vertical reveals. The Metalwërks Metal- Lok Aluminum Plate Column Covers, supplied by Metal Sales and Service, travel around the two almonds from north and west to the east face side.

Metal Sales and Service installed 400 6-foot by 6-foot triangular and diamond-shaped panels, a total of 87,400 square feet, in six colors with silver, grey and blue tones, which complement the blue and green tones of the glazed curtainwalls. The design features walls with staggered patterns and curving drum elements at the three-story elevator core and at the link to the garden. Wall elements were trimmed at grade with approximately 1,700 feet of 16-gauge custom stainless bases throughout the project, which was completed in October 2014.

The project utilized more than 6,500 ACM panels for 116,000 total square feet including 32,500 square feet of 6-foot by 6-foot Metalwërks 0.125-aluminum Glazed Spandrel Panels with 0.063-aluminum overlays in six Kynar Silver Blue and Green Metallic colors within the curtainwall façade. Additionally, Metal Sales and Service installed 36,000 square feet Metalwërks ACM-DBV Spline System; 10,000 square feet of Metalwërks Arcwall Plate and Metalok Column Covers; 32,000 square feet CENTRIA's IW 10A Panels; and 6,000 square feet of Construction Specialties Inc.'s louvers installed on the penthouse, garage and elevator tower.

The building is topped with an almondshaped penthouse on each wing clad with 21,000 square feet of CENTRIA's 22-gauge IW10-A insulated metal panels in Seafoam Green, mineral wool insulation and Construction Specialties' louvers.
