Gabled metal building houses new sports facility

Completed in August 2008, the Springfield College Field House in Springfield, Mass., is a state-of-the-art sports and recreation facility featuring a six-lane collegiate running track and playing fields for soccer and lacrosse.

The 93,820-square-foot (8,715-m2) gable symmetrical style metal building features a 185-foot (56-m) clear span framing system from Metallic Building Co., Houston, that measures 185 by 334 by 30 feet
(56 by 102 by 9 m) with a 2:12 roof slope. Support steels were employed for two mezzanines, backboards and large air-handling units.

The metal building offered clear, open space for the interior of the running track. Metallic also supplied Double- Lok roof panels, which are designed to endure high-force winds. Reverse PBR panels from Metallic are used for the building’s endwalls and sidewalls. Decorative architectural accents were used throughout the facility.

DiLullo Associates, Melrose, Mass., was the architect; Erland Construction, Burlington, Mass., was the general contractor; and Barnes Buildings and Management Group, Weymouth, Mass., was the builder.
