Historical elementary school renovated

Washington Elementary School is a kindergarten through fourth grade elementary school in Bangor, Pa. Part of the Bangor Area School District, the school’s renovation was featured as partof the Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania American Institute of Architects’ Smart Growth Schools showcase, which was exhibited at the Pennsylvania School Board Association’s School Design and Construction Conference held in 2007. The Smart Growth Schools initiative promotes the reuse of existing neighborhood schools, especially if they are historic. The Washington Elementary renovation was selected because the project demonstrated how an old, but treasured, neighborhood school was renovated to meet the needs of 21st century students. The school’s history reaches back to the Great Depression and was built under President Franklin Roosevelt’s Work Progress Administration.
