FreemanWhite Inc. specified a lightweight, metal skin to be supported by St. Joseph Hospital's primary building structure in Savannah, Ga. Project goals included reducing moisture infiltration, improving energy efficiency, aesthetics and safety. The 53-year-old masonry veneer wall system and windows were uninsulated. There was significant damage from moisture infiltration in the seven-story health care facility. Falling debris from the failing masonry was a safety hazard. The project engineers and local building codes required impact resistance testing because the hospital is in a high-wind velocity zone.

St. Joseph Hospital remained operational while it was reclad. First, the brick façade was removed. SECO Architectural Systems Inc. installed an exoskeleton steel frame to support an insulated metal panel skin and integrated window system.

SECO Architectural Systems installed 52,000 square feet of CENTRIA's 3-inch-thick Formawall Dimension Series metal wall panels in Lee Ivory and Cypress Olive; 12,000 square feet of CENTRIA's FV400HR and FV600 Formavue window systems; and 1,100 square feet of Altech Panel Systems Inc.'s Accu-Trac ES Aluminum Composite Panel System in Bronze and Red. CENTRIA's louvers were integrated with 27 metal wall panels.

Additionally, ProFab Custom Fabricators Inc. supplied, and SECO Architectural Systems installed, 135 tons of steel for the support system. Brinn Glass Inc. installed 8,000 square feet of Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope's hurricane-resistant curtainwall. The approximately $4 million renovation project was completed in May 2014.
