Metal building lessens costs for non-profit facility

The 30,000-square-foot (2,787-m2) Dick and Patty Elmore Center provides a large multipurpose facility for Girls Inc. of Jackson County in Seymour, Ind. Girls Inc. is an organization that strives to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold through informal education outside of school.

American Buildings Co., Eufaula, Ala., supplied the single slope and gable roof for the project, along with Architectural III wall panels in Dark Bronze and a Galvalume standing-seam II roof system. The SmartKote 70 percent PVDF resin paint system was supplied as Kynar 500 or Hylar 500 and manufactured by PPG Industrial Coatings, Pittsburgh.

Completed in July 2008, the $2.9 million budget for the project was all raised from local donations. The multipurpose building features a 12,000-square foot (1,115-m2) gymnasium; 2,500 square feet (232 m2) of instructional kitchen space; 6,000 square feet (557 m2) of office and classroom space; and 4,000 square feet (372 m2) of entrance and flex space.

The straightforward construction of the metal building allowed for not only a quick building enclosure for the contractor but also produced an affordable building shell for the owner. This allowed more donated dollars to be spent toward interior finishes, computers, gym and gymnastics equipment, furniture, building security systems and organization programming.

Hannom Wagle & Cline Engineering, Indianapolis, was the architect, and Dunlap & Co. Inc., Columbus, Ind., was the general contractor.
