Metal creates non-denominational tent structures

Salmeno Spiritual CenterThe Salmeno Spiritual Center was designed by Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture, New York City. They were asked by Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., to create structures that spiritually connect students, alumni, faculty and staff on campus. The site includes four structures, two outdoor gathering spaces, six small woodland gardens and a deck. The center mimics the United Nations Meditation Room with a main building constructed like a tent to symbolize a religious encounter and hospitality.

ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa., supplied the metal in the creation of these welcoming structures, including 644 square feet of PC Panel (PCP120); 228 square feet of PC Concave Arc
(PCV120); 291 square feet of PC Convex Arc (PCX120); and 2,733 square feet of Field-Lok (FLL135). These products are 24-gauge 55 percent Al-Zn coated steel with acrylic coating.

“The ATAS metal siding was selected to provide an unmistakable impression for these unpretentious structures as distinct from the rest of campus and to complement the mirrored surface of Kameron Pond,” says Ben Caldwell, AIA, LEED AP, with Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture.

The builder was Suburban Construction Co. of NY Inc., Valhalla; the installer was D. Simonetti Roofing, Elmsford, N.Y.; and the distributor was New Castle Building Products, White Plains, N.Y.

Dr. Peter Mercer, Ramapo’s president, says of the project, “We will, at Ramapo, now have a venue for the pursuit of the spiritual dimension through discussion, debate and contemplation and for that, on behalf of Ramapo College, I express sincere and profound gratitude.”
