Scope: Two Avalon Communities buildings in New York installed woven metal mesh applications from Cambridge Architectural, Cambridge, Md., to add beauty and durability to the building elevators. Avalon Chrystie Place is a multifamily residential building located in the heart of Manhattan, and Avalon on the Sound East, located in Westchester County, provides luxury high-rise living close to downtown Manhattan.
Requirement: Because the elevators carry hundreds of passengers each day, they required an aesthetically pleasing yet extremely durable cladding material.
Solution: Cambridge’s woven metal mesh applications offer an elegant, durable and functional solution for the elevators.
Details: Residents are now greeted by the stunning visual and textural appeal of glistening woven metal fabrics. The brass and stainless-steel metal fabric applications contrast with the building’s other interior design elements, resulting in a classic yet contemporary look.
“As a cladding system, shimmering woven metal mesh continues to raise the bar on style and sophistication,” said Heather Collins, director of marketing for Cambridge Architectural. “Cambridge Landscape Interiors mesh applications provide a uniquely attractive, durable method of elevator cladding.”
“Cambridge Architectural mesh is the perfect material for elevator cabs,” said Doug Gilman, president of Elite Elevator Cab Remodeling Inc., Garden City Park, N.Y. “The combination of unique dimensional architectural composition combined with the much needed durability factor-not to mention the fact that it meets all elevator codes-make Cambridge Architectural mesh an ideal cladding material.”
Avalon Chrystie Place featured 168 square feet (16 m2) of Cambridge’s Circuit 141A pattern, featuring rigid, closed weaves. Avalon on the Sound East used 750 square feet (70 m2) of the rigid and open weaved Tile pattern. Both fabrics were installed using Cambridge’s Panel attachment hardware with no distracting clips or hangers visible.
Construction on the Avalon Communities buildings was completed in summer 2006. The project team for Avalon Chrystie Place consisted of Bovis Lend Lease, New York City, general contractor, and ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Garden City Park, N.Y., elevator contractor. The Avalon on the Sound East project team consisted of architectural firm, Fogarty Finger Architecture/Interiors, New York City, and elevator contractor, Elite Elevator Cab Remodeling.
Sustainability: Woven metal fabric and its corresponding attachment hardware maintain an extremely long life cycle, require minimal maintenance and can be manufactured from recycled materials.
