Jim Medly Architect, Albuquerque, N.M., was asked to design a 32,000-square-foot (2,973- m2), four-story frame stucco structure to house a Holiday Inn Select Hotel in Albuquerque. To stay within the Holiday Inn franchise requirements and program, the architect chose a metal roof to articulate the pitched roof of the structure while highlighting its appearance from the nearby freeway, making it visually appealing to business travelers on their way to the nearby airport.
The architect utilized more than 31,000 square feet (2,880 m2) of 26-gauge Galvalume PBR panels in Rustic Red with a Signature 200 paint system by MBCI, Houston. The metal roof allowed the architect to achieve the Southwestern character he was attempting, as well as a color that was acceptable to the Holiday Inn Architectural requirements.
Metal construction was chosen for its ease of installation and durability under the extreme New Mexico climate. The metal roof application will provide the client with a roof that will endure the desert extremes without a great deal of maintenance while retaining its beauty for a greater amount of time than competing materials without the additional cost.
Ameritus Hospitality Inc., Albuquerque, was the general contractor; and New Mexico MetalSystems, Albuquerque, was the metal installer.
