The new Manhasset Public Library in Manhasset, N.Y., needed to meet the community’s functional needs of additional space and retain the aesthetic appeal of the traditional building that matched the size and scale of the surrounding buildings while also creating a transition between the nearby commercial and residential areas.
The new 38,700-square-foot (3,595-m2) Manhasset Public Library replaces the previous 16,500-square-foot (1,533-m2) building, which was demolished to create space for a parking lot. The three-story building, with an additional level underground, compliments the surrounding neighborhoods while adding 50 percent more shelving room, increased storage space, a new children’s library, a story-hour room, play area and room for parent seating. Other additions include an enlarged community room with seating for 200, quiet study space, a café and expanded technological capabilities.
TCS II Terne-Coated Stainless Steel metal panels by Follansbee, Follansbee, W.Va., was utilized as the standing-seam roof and the decorative mansard.
“TCS II is a very traditional material and is often specified for historic restorations or those projects requiring a classic look,” said Edward Thomas, Follansbee vice president and general manager. “The Manhasset Public Library was designed to blend with the style and size of Manhasset. The mansard roof disguises the third story, giving the library the appearance of a two story building. In addition to helping the library fit neatly into its surroundings, the TCS II roof offers durability and requires little maintenance.”
“TCS II is a highly versatile material,” added Thomas. “TCS II offers a natural metal aesthetic and the formability and versatility to create any desired shape. This project is a great example of a building design and product working together to achieve the desired result.”
