LRK Inc. created a monolithic look for Jackson Central-Merry Fieldhouse in Jackson, Tenn., by wrapping the exterior with smooth metal wall panels. At the front entrance, lighter brown wood soffits and columns, and beige masonry highlight the entry, complementing the brown metal walls.
With respect to daylighting in Jackson Central-Merry High School’s gymnasium, LRK punched in the facade above bleachers with tall clerestory windows.
In terms of structure, LRK designed the fieldhouse with three connected metal building systems in a single facility. The fieldhouse contains a lobby, corridor, and gymnasium in 2,229.7 m2
(24,000 sf). The metal building systems met project requirements for long spans and ability to house many different types of spaces.
Yandell Construction Services Inc. erected Nucor Building Systems, a division of Nucor Corp., metal building systems. Importantly, inside the fieldhouse, LRK exposed some of the building’s structure.
Rogean Cadieux-Smith, AIA, EDAC, of LRK, says, “Utilizing Nucor’s metal building systems created an ideal synergy of the iconic modern form and the versatility of the interior spaces. Exposing the structure to highlight the strength, scale, and rhythm of the volume, is central to the enduring success of the project.”
Insulated metal panels (IMPs) were used for the roof and walls. On the roof, Yandell Construction installed Nucor’s SR2 standing seam roof system with IMPs and 26-gauge steel skins in Regal White. At the backsides of parapet walls, Yandell Construction installed Nucor’s Classic IMPs with 26-gauge steel skins in Regal White.
At walls, Yandell Construction installed Nucor’s ST40 Straited IMPs with 26-gauge steel skins in Urbane Bronze.
