Asphalt tiles were torn off and replace with metal tiles on St. John’s Lutheran Church. The asphalt shingles lasted 25 to 30 years and the building was constructed in 1956. The church is located in an area that experiences high winds, and the owners sought a replacement roof that would last longer than the asphalt shingles.

Steve Sawvell, owner of Sawvell Roofing and Siding LLC, the installer for the project, says, “On average, there are probably one or two wind events there a month with winds of more than 40 mph. [The owners] were having a lot of problems with shingles blowing off. [Metal tiles are] durable. It’s done really well through the winter and survived several recent wind events.”

Sawvell Roofing and Siding installed 9,500 square feet of CertainTeed Corp.’s Matterhorn Slate metal tiles in Brownstone, which is rated a cool roof color by the Cool Roof Rating Council. The project was completed in October 2017.

Gary Tillman, pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church, says, “The parishioners have made nothing but positive comments. They love that they don’t need to worry about the high winds the area receives. They also love the color and design.”
