After nearly 20 years of discussion and planning, St. Louis opened its $27 million multimodal Gateway Transportation Center. The project provides facilities for St. Louis’ intra-city Metro-Link light rail system and city buses plus Amtrak passenger trains and Greyhound bus service. The 20,000-square-foot (1,858-m2) terminal building does not duplicate the previous station but captures the excitement and identity that the facility has sustained. The use of technology, volumes of space and dynamic forms recreate the vocabulary and sense of expression established by other significant stations and world transportation centers.
The project utilized 20,000 square feet of RHEINZINK 22-gauge, 0.03-inch (0.8-mm) Preweathered Blue Gray Flat-Lock Tiles from RHEINZINK America Inc., Woburn, Mass. KAI Design & Build, St. Louis, was the architect; K & S Associates Inc., St. Louis, was the general contractor; and David Hyde & Associates Inc., St. Louis, was the fabricator and installer.
