Scandinavian geography including mountains, glaciers and the like, a reference to the branding of the Minnesota Vikings, is expressed in Crawford Architects LLC’s design for Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center. On the exterior, walls have angled corners and architectural overlays of light gray and white triangles, and a Minnesota Vikings logo of a Norseman, adhered to base metal panels. The Norseman graphic was applied with 3M Co.’s exterior vinyl film.
Doug Osborn, senior associate at Crawford Architects, says, “A highly flexible system, Formawall [insulated metal panels (IMPs)] enabled us to achieve our glacial design objective. And, as a bonus, [the IMPs have] standardized panel dimensions. The Formawall system, including necessary flashings, sealants, and other components, provided very clean lines and the right kind of crisp, refined appearance we wanted for the exterior of this facility.”
Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center houses 277,000 square feet. It has an indoor football field, locker rooms, auditorium, weight room, mezzanine overlooking the weight room, medical treatment areas, Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame and retail store. The performance center is connected to the Minnesota Vikings’ headquarters building, which is differentiated from the performance center by its lower building height and dark gray metal cladding. The performance center and headquarters building are at Viking Lakes, a 240-acre mixed-use development with multiple buildings. The development also has outdoor football fields including TCO Stadium, field house, Twin Cities Orthopedics medical building and a large entrance canopy.

Additionally, in the weight room, there are floor-to-ceiling windows and two bifold that doors open the space to outdoor football fields. Overhead Door Co. of the Northland installed the doors, supplied by Schweiss Doors. The bifold, lift-strap doors are 20 feet, 1 inch wide by 13 feet, 8 inches tall that provide 11-foot, 2-inch-tall openings. The doors are operated by top-drive motors, photo eye sensors, manual latches and emergency backup systems in case of power outage.
