William R. Anton Elementary School, Los Angeles

Located in Los Angeles, the William R. Anton Elementary School was completed in September 2009. The 98,000-square-foot facility houses 1,176 students in K-5 and features 51 classrooms, an outdoor play field and an underground parking structure. William R. Anton Elementary replaced the nearby 92-year-old Hammel Street Elementary School, which now serves as the site for a new area high school. The school was built as part of a $20 billion New School Construction and Modernization Program initiated by the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1997.

william_r_antonHuntington Beach, Calif.-based R & J Sheet Metal installed 1,260 square feet of Louisville, Ky.-based Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.’s 20-gauge T16-L curved horizontal siding panels in Kynar 500 Champagne Gold. To create a visually engaging building façade, the panels were curved by Ontario, Calif.-based vendor, Curveline Inc. The end result is an aesthetically pleasing vertical column made up of curved horizontal lines that serves to offset the other building materials including plaster and brick. The project team utilized 10,240 square feet of Metal Sales’ 20-gauge T16-L panels in Kynar 500 Champagne Gold for the external stair enclosure, but chose not to curve the material to create a distinctly different aesthetic while maintaining a marked consistency throughout the building.

Built on 3.2 acres of uneven land, the site’s severely sloped topography presented many challenges for the project team. To create both an aesthetically pleasing and hazard-free learning and play environment, the campus was designed vertically, ranging from two to four stories throughout.

The facility was built to meet the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) standards, and employs such features as passive solar shading to help reduce utility costs. The overall sustainability of the structure achieved the Pacific Gas & Energy “Savings by Design” performance goal and exceeded California’s Title 24 efficiency standards by 30 percent.

Nadel Inc., Los Angeles, served as the project architect, and Pinner Construction Co. Inc., Anaheim, Calif., served as the general contractor.
