To meet budget, project duration and design goals, Emc2 Group Architects Planners PC designed Gadsden Elementary School District 32 Administration Center in San Luis, Ariz., with a metal building system.
The metal building system was specified, in part, to meet the owner’s budget requirements for the project. The project started as a concrete-masonry-unit (CMU) structure with a thermoplastic olefin (TPO) roof system. It became over budget and was in jeopardy of being canceled. The metal building system and metal roof put the project back in line with the owner’s budget.
Additionally, a metal building system shortened construction time, provided economical high-bay storage for the warehouse and utilized trade workers in the area. Pre-finished surfaces minimized maintenance costs.
Nucor Building Systems supplied its metal building system for the 25,000-square-foot project. Two metal panels were used for the roof. Arizona Corporate Builders LLC was the metal building system subcontractor and coordinated with JRP Construction LLC, which installed 25,000 square feet of Nucor Building Systems’ 24-gauge CFR metal roof panels in Polar White, which provided a cool roof. JRP Construction also installed 1,200 square feet of MBCI’s 7.2 Panels in Ash Gray horizontally on the roof. The 7.2 Panels were installed on a 5-foot wall fascia band for aesthetics and sun shading of glass wall systems.
For walls, JRP Construction installed 8,200 square feet of Nucor Building Systems’ 26-gauge Reverse Classic metal wall panels in Polar White and Fox Gray. The Reverse Classic wall panels were reverse rolled and strategically placed for aesthetics.
Metal wall panels were used in tandem with CMUs to add variety to wall textures. The building’s mainframe steel columns were reverse tapered and exposed to provide a mass look in conjunction with CMU wall areas. Combinations of metal wall panel profiles, color changes and horizontal and vertical applications create aesthetically pleasing wall elevation views.
Gadsden Elementary School District 32 serves South Yuma County and the border community of San Luis, Ariz. Prior to the project, administration offices and warehouse space were located in a leased storefront with limited technology space, training space and parking. The Administration Center provides office space for administrative departments, a central warehouse and training rooms for teacher in-service, board meetings and community functions. The $3,804,399 project was funded by a bond election. The cost of the metal building system was $300,000. It was completed in March 2017.
