Architects at Joseph Wong Design Associates met with faculty members for the Social and Behavioral Sciences Building at San Diego Mesa College in San Diego, and collaborated on an objective to create a dynamic facility that would become the campus core. The academic facility features classrooms, laboratory spaces for psychology, anthropology and geography, administrative offices and a series of outdoor courtyards and entry courts that connect the building to the campus.
Natural light, material selection and modern design elements shaped the building. Large operable glass doors and windows provide natural light and ventilation to the majority of interior spaces. Sustainable features include on-site stormwater management, drought-tolerant native landscaping, efficient mechanical and lighting systems and low-flow plumbing fixtures. The three-story, 73,700-squarefoot project was completed in February 2015 and is on track to obtain LEED Silver certification.
The project utilized VMZinc metal wall panels supplied by Umicore Building Products USA Inc., Reynobond aluminum composite material (ACM) wall panels and soffit panels supplied by Alcoa Architectural Products and aluminum sunshades supplied by The Airolite Co. LLC. Additionally, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope supplied its Reliance Curtain Wall and ICR-225 storefront and entry doors, and PPG Industries Inc. supplied its Solarban60 low-E glazing for the project.
