Inclement weather did not prevent the exterior of Breck High School in Minneapolis from being installed in the dead of winter. MG McGrath, Maplewood, Minn., fabricated and installed 11,144 square feet of Moon Township, Pa.-based CENTRIA’s 20-gauge CS-200 metal wall panels in Copper with a Sundance Mica finish, and 800 square feet of Burlington, N.J.-based Merchant & Evans Inc.’s 22-gauge Zip Rib standing seam meta roofing panels 16 inches on-center in Copper with a Kynar 2-coat finish.
Approximately 500 square feet of SP437 louvers from Industrial Louvers, Delano, Minn., match the CENTRIA panels. Additionally, 200 square feet of 4-mm Reynobond PE Composite Column Covers in Vancouver Copper with a Kynar 2-coat finish from Alcoa Architectural Products, Eastman, Ga., and 30,000 square feet of Grace Perm A Barrier air barrier from Grace Construction Products, Cambridge, Mass., were also utilized on the school, completed in June 2013.
MG McGrath subcontracted the 30,000 square feet of spray-applied air barrier to Custom Drywall, St. Paul, Minn., before installing 3-inch horizontal Z-Furring and 3-inch Foamular 250 Insulation from Owens Corning, Toledo, Ohio. MG McGrath installed a 7/8-inch Vertical Hat channel to the Zfurring and attached the CENTRIA panel to the hat. MG McGrath also used matching trim metal to trim all the sills, and window, door and louver openings.
Before the air barrier was installed, MG McGrath installed Densdeck from Georgia-Pacific Building Products, Atlanta, to the metal decking on the four standing seam roofs. Additionally, MG McGrath installed 3-inch Z-furring and insulation and 3/4- inch plywood. Grace Ultra was then installed to the plywood, and the Zip Rib panels and trims were installed. MG McGrath trimmed out the louvers prior to installing them.
The general contractor, McGough Construction, St. Paul, Minn., poly-ed the whole project to install the brick and curtainwalls. MG McGrath installed trim metals so the brick and windows could be installed and caulked, and temporary heating could be removed as soon as possible. Holabird & Root, Chicago, was the architect.
