Metal building and roof results in cost savings for owners

The Beck Residence in Bellingham, Wash., was designed for a couple wanting a contemporary, industrial look that was also economical and environmentally affordable. The architect suggested steel for the single-story, 1,500-square foot (139-m2) residence because of its durability, design flexibility and affordability, resulting in significant cost savings. The owners appreciated the green aspect of working with steel, knowing that the structural steel and metal cladding are both recycled and recyclable. The residence also features concrete floors with radiant heat and a predominately southern exposure to help maintain constant temperatures throughout. Additionally, the home’s structural integrity will present a solid defense in areas subject to seismic events or extreme weather conditions.

Rudy Veland of Bellingham, was the architect; North Cascade Builders LLC, Bellingham, was the general contractor; and Kimberly Larrabee, Walkers Floor and Home, Bellingham, was the interior designer. Sandy, Ore.-based Web Steel Buildings supplied the metal building, while West Sacramento, Calif.-based ASC Building Products supplied 3,633 square feet (338 m2) of its Skyline Zincalume Plus metal panels.
