Eye-catching metal roof tops residence

The 5,000-square-foot (465-m2) Meese Residence in Duluth, Minn.,features an eye-catching metal roof with several curved dormers at the front and back, as well as a curved front door entrance canopy to break up the rooflines and add visual contrast.

Metal roofing was chosen for its durability, snow-shedding characteristics and superior resistance to impact, making it perfect for the Minnesota climate. The Meese family had used a metal tile panel roof from Ontario, Calif.-based Met-Tile Inc. on its previous home and chose to use the roof again because it added value and curb appeal to the property.

The house, garage and connecting breezeway utilized approximately 8,500 square feet (790 m2) of 26-gauge Met-Tile panels in varying lengths, up to 20 feet (6 m). The panels were finished in Elk Grove Village, Ill.-based Becker Specialty Corp.’s Super 4800 SMP in Slate Gray.

The Met-Tile panels were installed over plywood decking and felt underlayment with an ice and water shield used on critical areas of the roof. Carlisle Residential, Carlisle, Pa., supplied its WIP 100 underlayment and WIP 300HT Water and Ice Protection for the project. Considerable on-site cutting and flashing was required to install the Met-Tile panels over the curved dormers. The installer wrapped the Met-Tile panels around a barrel-shaped wood canopy substructure to create the entrance canopy over the front door.

Helstrom Architects Inc., Duluth, was the architect; Bruce Von Riedel, Crosswood Inc., Knife River, Minn., was the general contractor; and Classic Roofing Systems by K.F. Loosen Construction, Cloquet, Minn., served as the roofing installer.
