Environmentally friendly high school

The environmentally friendly Samuel V. Champion High School, Boerne, Texas, will outlive any conventional school system, while providing a healthy, productive and comfortable environment for its students and staff.

The school features a water collection system with a metal cistern; the largest water capture and reuse system in Texas; water conserving plumbing fixtures; optimized energy performance, including efficient light fixtures; naturally daylit areas; regionally derived materials; condensate for irrigation; and xeriscape.

Completed in September 2008, the project features a metal building by Horizon Structural Systems Inc., New Braunfels, Texas, and structural steel from Wilborn Steel, San Antonio. MBCI, Houston, supplied 34,000 square feet (3,159 m2) of standingseam roofing, 20,000 square feet (1,858 m2) of metal soffit panels and 19,800 square feet (1,839 m2) of metal siding panels.

O’Neill Conrad Oppelt Architects Inc., San Antonio, along with Pfluger Associates Architects, Austin, Texas, were the architects for the project, and Joeris, San Antonio, was the general contractor.
