Bank Receives Dramatic Upgrade

The First Federal Bank of Harrison, Ark., recently underwent a retrofit metal roof upgrade at its branch in Mountain Home, Ark. The 12,000- square-foot (1,115-m2) building was originally built with a flat roof that needed to be replaced. The architect, Williams & Dean Associated Architects, Little Rock, Ark., presented the concept of incorporating a new sloped metal roof.

This particular project was more difficult than normal because of four large rooftop HVAC units that needed to remain on the roof, requiring the retrofit system to be constructed around and over the units while adding passageway access for maintenance and possible replacement in future years. Additionally, roofing over air-handling units requires a properly designed and adequate ventilation system to satisfy proper operation. To complete the upgrade, the bank also made improvements such as an enhanced ATM drive-up lane, interior space remodeling and a new main entrance to the bank.

The design team wanted the new roof to play a primary role in improving the bank’s curb appeal. The new roof utilized three contiguous roof areas- one over the center bank lobby and the two outer areas over the existing drive-thru lanes. To facilitate the additional ventilation needed for the HVAC units, the 22-foot-
(7-m-) wide dutch-gables received custom triangular louvers manufactured by Metallic Products Corp., Houston. A simple dormer was then added at the rear of the building to permit maintenance access through a 6-foot- (2- m-) wide hinged louver. At the front of the bank, an additional dormer was constructed to create a new EIFS façade and main lobby entrance.

The steel framing system used for the project was Houston-based MBCI’s NuRoof Retrofit system that was custom designed to maintain the structural integrity of the existing building roof system and accommodate the desired new roof geometry. The new metal roofing selected for the project was MBCI’s 24-gauge LokSeam with an18-inch
(457-mm) profile coated with Signature 300 PVDF in Harbor Blue. Newly soffited areas received MBCI’s L-12 panels. The bank’s existing metal fascia was painted Harbor Blue to compliment the new metal roof as a finishing touch. Paramount Metal Systems, Little Rock, was the roofing contractor for the project.
