Located in a beach community south of Santa Cruz, Calif., the Zeidler residence reflects design influences from Morocco and Japan. The residence is comprised of two buildings (main house and guest cottage) aligned to form an interior courtyard with a lap pool and outdoor kitchen. Approximately 2,500 square feet of RHEINZINK® 0.7mm/24gauge pre-weathered Blue-Gray Zinc Composite Material (ZCM) by Alcoa was utilized. The ZCM interfaces with a palette that includes burnished concrete block, stainless steel, cast-glass, steel-troweled stucco and walnut millwork. Design for the project was provided by Steven Ehrlich Architects, Culver City, Calif. As reported in Architectural Digest, the structure is grounded and ethereal, transparent and opaque. “I like a sense of surprise when you enter a residence,” said Ehrlich. “I think of houses as being about more than frozen sculpture and capturing space. They are about people connecting to people, nature and their own feelings.”
