Recognized for its Neo-Byzantine Baroque style, Chicago, Ill.’s St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral underwent major exterior restoration to preserve its architectural integrity. The project—led by JLK Architects, Berglund Construction, and Daprato Rigali Studios—used traditional techniques and modern technology, earning its place as one of the ten winning projects. The Copper Development Association (CDA) has announced the winners of the 2025 North American Copper in Architecture Awards (NACIA), now in its 18th year. This year’s selections include a diverse range of projects—from the restoration of historic landmarks to the creation of new, copper-clad facilities—each demonstrating technical skill, material innovation, and architectural impact.

The annual awards program celebrates the use of architectural copper and copper alloys in roofing, facades, wall systems, and custom elements. Selected by a panel of judges from a competitive pool of U.S. and Canadian entries, the 10 honorees were evaluated on system design, integration with the building, installation quality, and sustainability.

Five new construction projects received recognition:

  • 37 Hillside Senior Apartments (New York, N.Y.)

  • New England Biolabs Garden Site Facility Expansion (Ipswich, Mass.)

  • Portsmouth Abbey School Student Center (Portsmouth, R.I.)

  • Snowmass Retreat (Snowmass, Colo.)

  • The Spirit Garden (Toronto, Ont.)

The remaining five winners were honored for restoration work:

  • Hillsdale County Courthouse (Hillsdale, Mich.)

  • Magic Chef Mansion (St. Louis, Mo.)

  • St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral (Chicago, Ill.)

  • Temple Emanu-El Dome (Birmingham, Ala.)

  • The Frick Collection—Reception Hall Copper Roof (New York, N.Y.)

“These award-winning projects exemplify copper’s enduring performance, adaptability, and timeless appeal,” says Larry Peters, project manager of building construction at CDA. “From contemporary installations to historic preservation, the 2025 winners demonstrate what’s possible when quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design converge.”
