Durability in high winds critical for new office building

Located in Brownsville, Texas, this 20,204-square foot (1,877-m2) Social Security Administration office required a clear-span metal building because office workers must work in cubicles due to several government regulations.

A pre-engineered metal building from Metallic Building Co., Houston, was chosen for its durability and ability to withstand strong winds in inclement weather. The structure has a windload of 130 mph and UL 90 for Texas Wind Coverage. Metallic’s 22-gauge PBR roof was chosen to create an even shadowed appearance when the Spanish tile roof was laid on top. The 102 2/3- by 167 2/3-foot
(31- by 51-m) building has a 15-foot (5-m) eave height and 1/2:12 roof slope. The project was started in February 2008 and completed in July 2008.

Dura Bilt Products Inc., Albuquerque, N.M., was the architect and general contractor. Precision Steel Works, Pharr, Texas, was the erector and roofing contractor.
